HCYR’s Kerr County Auxiliary has operated a thrift store since the organization was formed in 1977. The first “store” was run out of a storage unit, with members taking turns on Saturdays to put stuff out on tables in the driveway. The purpose was to raise funds and find furnishings for the first children’s cottage, scheduled to open in 1978.
The store was an instant hit with volunteers and community shoppers alike. In 1990, it landed at its current location at 3171 Junction Highway in Ingram. Thanks to an all-volunteer team, the thrift store sends 100% of its funds (minus a few utility bills) to the Ranch. The store continues to grow, serving the community as well as the children.
The Big Springs Ranch Auxiliary of Real County was formed in 1999 to support the new Big Springs Ranch for Children. The Auxiliary has operated a thrift store since 2000. Located in the historic town square, just behind the courthouse on Evergreen Street, the Store, with an “old west” façade, is one of downtown Leakey’s quaintest shops. The store has become a community treasure, a place for locals and tourists to visit and shop, and a bountiful source of furnishings and revenues for BSRC.
Both stores share the two-fold purpose of providing support to the children’s homes, and bargains for shoppers. Both stores are always in need of quality things to sell, as well as volunteers. Stop by and check us out. The Ingram store is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, and the Leakey store three days a week, Thursday to Saturday. Contact the stores directly or our main offices for more information.
