Built in 2008, Najim Charter School serves students in grades 8-12 at HCYR in Ingram. The school includes eight self-contained classrooms, a student learning center, rooms for special education, and an office where counselors can see students throughout the day.
A gymnasium, cafeteria, athletic field, theater, vocational shop and agricultural barn complement the classroom building. Each student receives an educational assessment that is used to identify learning levels, emotional dynamics, and behavioral challenges.
Specialized reading and math activities are coordinated with volunteer mentors who give important one-on-one attention. Small classes, with 8 students or fewer, plus instructional aides, ensure that all aspects of the child’s educational plan are addressed. If students remain at HCYR through their teenage years, 100% graduate from high school, a remarkable statistic in itself. Many attend college or trade school.
Our Charter School motto is “treatment drives the day”, meaning that emotional healing and academic growth go hand in hand, but when emotional breakdowns interrupt the learning environment, we deal with the presenting issue, separating the student with a counselor until he or she is ready to return to class. This process avoids unnecessary suspensions and gives students a second chance at completing a day of school.
The vision for Najim Charter School is to provide accelerated learning for each student so that they have the best opportunity for future success in career, family, and college. This is accomplished by combining highly qualified instructors, optimal physical resources, and a deep commitment for each student to succeed.
