The Ed Brune Charter School was granted its charter by the Texas Education Agency in 2000 and became the first of three charter schools managed by Hill Country Youth Ranch, giving the Ranch an accredited educational alternative for serving its residents. The school provides high quality individualized education for students in grades K – 12.
The campus, located near Leakey on the beautiful Big Springs Ranch, extends along the banks of the Frio River with a ten-building complex. In addition to standard classrooms, facilities include a fully equipped science lab, a state of the art computer learning center with video streaming for distance learning, a music room, an art studio, a well-equipped home economics room, and a journalism and photography center.
The two story library offers availability to a variety of literature and research materials. The vocational shop is well equipped for woodwork, metalwork and auto mechanics. The barn and equestrian center support agricultural classes plus training in horsemanship and animal care. The Brune Sports Center, along with outdoor track and sports fields, provide a home to the Brune Hawks – the school basketball, volleyball, and track teams.
Classes are small, most under 10 students. Clinical professionals provide insight to help understand the emotional and learning problems a student may experience. A primary goal of the school is to help each student rise to their highest level of academic potential, while identifying and overcoming any barrier to learning and success. History shows it works. Students make significant academic advances as measured by standardized testing, and the school consistently ranks in the top 5% of Texas Charter Schools.
