| Community Outreach -- Contributing to our Neighbors | ||
|
Giving Back in Gratitude Aware of its responsibility to serve the community in which we live, and to teach that responsibility to children, the Youth Ranch has established several outreach programs. The Auxiliary operates thrift stores in Ingram and Leakey, which, in addition to providing revenues, provide the communities with a place to purchase quality second-hand items at garage sale prices. Since 1979, Youth Ranchers (seen right) have cleaned a five mile stretch of State Highway 27 between Ingram and Kerrville on a quarterly basis, as part of the State's "Adopt a Highway" campaign. The Ranch team has won numerous state awards for its efforts on this particularly long and busy stretch of road. |

Victims of Abuse Work for Prevention Every April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and each April HCYR and BSRC children, themselves victims of such abuse, find ways to enhance public awareness about the topic and support the campaign. Shown at right are this year's participants, who made posters, learned songs and performed in public to lend their voices to the cause of prevention. In addition, youths at the Big Springs Campus have become well-known for their award-winning participation in Relay for Life, an annual walk and vigil that raises money and awareness for Cancer Research. Such participation lifts children to see beyond their own worries and wounds and to become part of a larger community. |
