Editor’s Note: In 1996, Oma Bell Perry gave her Big Springs Ranch to HCYR for the purpose of building a children’s home, her family’s dream. Oma Bell passed away in 2003, and children now coming to live at the Ranch know her only through videos and the stories others tell. One of this year’s seniors felt moved to write Oma Bell a letter on graduation eve.

Dear Oma Bell,

To start this letter I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Ashley Sanchez. When I arrived at this ranch, I did not think I was going to stay very long. The first day I arrived I was very positive that this was not the place for me. I thought this place was beautiful, but I saw no mall and not very much to do. As the days went by I started to realize that the country can be so much fun and that there are many things to do. It is also very relaxing.

I don’t really know who you are other than what I have seen in videos or stories that I have heard. But to me you seem like a very nice lady, funny, and you love to smile. I think we might have that in common. I also like to smile even when I’m sad or mad. I wish I could have had the chance to meet you. Things would have probably been different having you around.

I know that you see everything from heaven, but I just want to tell you that your dream has come true. This ranch is a beautiful place for kids. You left your dream in the hands of wonderful people who always keep you in memory. I want to thank you for leaving this ranch behind for us kids.

Because of you I had a place to live and feel safe, and now thanks to your dream I have accomplished one of my goals in life. I graduate on Thursday the 29th of May, and after I will attend college in Uvalde and major in Athletic Training and be a Coach. Just because your physical presence is not here with us today does not mean you are not part of my achievement. To me you are one of the most important people I should be thanking.
