Our Sharing Will Build the Future
By Brent Bates, Bates Total Assets Management Published in the Corral newsletter
All too often in today’s busy world, we find ourselves working harder than ever, longer than ever, and not taking the time to stop and smell the roses. The roses have never been more sweet than those we have grown here at Hill Country Youth Ranch. We would like to take time and thank everyone for the many gifts, talents, and assets that have been shared with the Ranch, and to remind you that it is your sharing at work at HCYR.

Our goal of rehabilitating today’s youth has never been more critical and has never been more under attack. With the changes in the methods of assessment, placement and compensation for these youth, comes a unique and rare opportunity: an opportunity for the Ranch to step forward as the premier organization in the areas of risk management, organizational management, and promotion of "Our Shared Work."

We find ourselves in trying times, but also times of great opportunity. With the addition of the 7,000 acre Big Springs Ranch on the Frio, we can dramatically expand our work in offering wounded children long-term care and treatment. The expanded mission also presents us with the opportunity to include churches, corporations, and other organizations in the ministry.

Our success and failure will be largely dependent on our ability to put the sharing of all of us to work effectively. Historically, we have had a modest, low-key approach toward putting people and their philanthropic desires and the Ranch’s needs together. But the opportunity that we presently have is so overwhelming that we are embarking on a new path of asking our friends and patrons to get even more involved with HCYR, as well as introducing ourselves to those who may not yet know of our calling.

In future additions of the "Corral," we will be explaining some of the programs and opportunities which, with involvement from others, can help make our work at the Ranch the best it can be. Ultimately, this is a mission of sharing, and we seek partnership in both the challenges and the rewards.
