Summer, Part I: Structured Activities
The summer program is a unique
part of every child’s experience at HCYR. Summer is divided into two
parts. During the first six weeks, until mid-July, all residents
participate in a scheduled set of structured electives, including a
work program to earn personal spending money, as well as educational
and recreational activities to enhance personal skills such as
acting, painting, swimming, playing sports, or riding horses, among
many other electives.

Summer, Part II: Venturing Out
During the weeks before school starts, HCYR families plan activities
such as educational trips, camping, community projects, or leisure
outings. Often residents develop their own personal projects.
Some find jobs, some explore personal interests, some try out for
plays in the local community. Thus, summer balances scheduled
educational and vocational activities with an opportunity for
families and individuals to create their own schedules.
